The idea of having a “Leadership Training Program” (LTP) originated in Jul 2006 when the JY members from Hyderabad went for a training program to Bangalore. It was decided then that Hyderabad would need to have an LTP program for all its leaders in Andhra Pradesh.
Flame Keepers 2006 – an all Andhra, JY leaders training program was conceived in early November and was finally arranged from the 17-19th Nov, at Jyotirmayee society, Secunderabad. This was patronized by 55 members (about 22 girls), of which 15 were from Vijayawada, one from Adilabad, one from khammam while the rest were from Hyderabad.
The program commenced at about 6:30 pm on 17th nov, when only about 15 members were present. As in true JY style, it started with action songs lead by Russell with Ashvin as the MC, and gradually by about 7:30 pm there were almost about 30 people present. Mass followed and was offered by Rev. Fr. Cheriyachan (national pastor for JY) .
Fr. Cheriyachan presented the homily in a very innovative manner…. He requested that the lights in the hall be turned off and then everyone was distributed with an edible sweet ladoo. He then asked us to break the ladoo into two halves, consume one half and then exchange the other half with our neighbors … He then explained this action as the ladoo resembling a flame. This flame should always burn within us and we should always make sure that we exchange and pass this flame of love to all our neighbors around.
What better way than to so emphatically keep inline with the program theme –
“Flame keepers ’06 – Fan, Tend and Pass the flame of Love”.
This was a sweet welcome.
Mass got over at around 8:30 pm. Fr. Cheriyachan had to board a bus later in the evening and so after our thanks to Fr. Cherian, he bid us farewell and resumed on his journey.
Action songs followed again and a quick ice breaker – “Mixed bag”. While everyone enjoyed themselves in this interim, they also got introduced to each other and had some good time of fun.
Dinner was served at 9:00 pm, during which time some volunteers helped out in re-organizing and arranging the hall, altar for Taize prayer which was to follow.
After a good dinner (somehow food never seems to be a problem at any JY program, since we are always served with good delicious food-God provides), it was Taize prayer time. Most of them were attending a Taize prayer for the first time, and this was conducted by Rodney bhaiyya (an active JY member from Kerala who happened to be a part of LTP with God’s intervention & proved to be more than just a resource person). After teaching everyone some Taize songs, the lights were switched off & the huge candle lit, the Taize prayer began. Although it was late into the night, everyone actively participated in the singing and prayer which lasted for about 45 mins. At around 10:30 pm announcements for the next day were made and everyone was requested to retire to bed to wake up early the next day.
The program team then met up for a meeting to analyze the day’s events and also skim through the events for the following day.
The dawn of 18th nov, saw most of the JY members rise up by 5:00 am, and after a cool water shower in the winter cold everyone assembled in the hall at 6:15 am.
Adolf bhaiyya (JY-Hyd animator, now presently in Nalgonda) after a brief keynote address lead everyone into a time of praise and worship. Again a beautiful time to start the day with the Lord and all of us spent a wonderful time just praising and thanking GOD. This was followed by a small session by Rodney bhaiyya on personal prayer.
Everyone was then asked to remain and pray in silence and have their personal time for prayer.
Breakfast followed at 7:45 am and everyone re-assembled at the hall at 8:20 am in time for some action songs lead by Vignan. Marina and Vignan were the MCs for the day and Marina introduced uncle Rajan (resource person from Gujarat, who travels extensively throughout India, imparting the good news) who then took up a session on
Fanning the flame - “Relationship with God”. He quoted extensively from the Bible and made all of us aware of what and how should our relationship with GOD remain.
After this everyone was divided into small groups and we had a group sharing from the Bible on the topic - “Long walk to Emmaus”. There was a questionnaire pertaining to our walk and relationship with God so far, given to each group and the members were asked to share their experiences on them.
Rajan uncle took up the next session on Fanning the flame – “God’s call” and discipleship. He again quoted profusely from the Bible and intermixed this message with his personal life time experiences and testimony.
After a tea break at 11:30 am everyone assemble back at the hall again to start off with some action songs lead by Russell.
Naveen Thomas (resource person from Bangalore and an active JY member) commenced the next session on Tending the flame – “Constants in the life of a Disciple”. He stressed upon the importance of personal prayer, sacraments, Word of God etc. This session also had many people like Prakash, Besto, Annette, Prashanth, etc share their personal experiences.
Lunch was served at 1:00 pm and everyone got back to the hall at 1:45 pm. On the first day, all the participants were divided into different groups titled “Love”, “Joy”, “Peace”, “Understanding”, “Kindness” and “Temperance”…. So everyday different groups were responsible for cleaning the hall, serving the food, maintaining the time etc
Rajan uncle took the next session Tending the flame – “Importance of purity”. He touched upon topics of interpersonal relationships & sexuality, importance of confessions and made everyone to prepare for confessions which followed.
Fr Packiaraj s.j from Satyodayam, Fr. Arun Franciscan from Ramnagar parish and Fr. John helped everyone in making a very good confession which went on for more than one and half hours with still some people left to confess.
However, mass started at 4:30 pm and Fr. Arun offered the mass. In his homily, he spoke about “Love” and so beautifully he elicited its meaning. Love can be classified into 3 categories viz. eros, peros and agape. Eros is basically an erotic kind of love, while peros is a fellowship love, but all of us need to rise to the third level which is agape ie a God kind of love. This is the most supreme love of all.
After the mass which ended at 5:30 pm it was time for some recreational and outdoor games conducted by Naveen Thomas. He divided everyone into 2 groups and organized the “Dog and the bone” game.
At about 6:30 pm everyone reached the hall in time for the next session Tending the flame-“Cost & struggles of discipleship” which was taken up by Rajan uncle. he mentioned about the struggles in the life of a disciple, beauty of being a disciple and becoming a part of God’s plan.
This was then followed by Adoration conducted by Rodney bhaiyya and Rajan uncle. This was a time of inner healing and with all the lights switched off and just the blessed sacrament exposed & a burning candle at the centre of the hall, the environment seemed just to perfect to cry to the LORD and just surrender. One incident on humility carried out during this adoration was everyone was asked to stand in pairs and each member in the pair was asked to kiss the other person’s feet and pray for him. What better way to be more humble than to go down on the knees and kiss our neighbors feet?
Dinner was served at 9:00 pm and everyone returned to the hall by 9:45 pm for some action songs. Following this Rodney bhaiyya took up the next session on Personal prayer and leadership. Again a very informative session with supporting texts from the Bible, and some personal real time experiences.
Although extremely late at about 10:30 pm everyone was given a lighted candle and went outdoors within the campus into a rosary procession. In the cold night, with all us in procession reciting the rosary holding the small flame, this was an exhilarating experience.
Everyone retired to bed at about 11:00 pm while the service team members accompanied by uncle Rajan and Naveen met up for a discussion on the days events and the proceedings for the next day.
The final day of Flame Keepers 06 saw everyone rise early by 5:00 am and assemble at the hall by 6:15 am. The day started off with some action songs and then a time of praise and worship lead by Russell. Vandana and Prashanth were the MCs for the day.
After a time of personal prayer Rajan uncle took up a session on Evangelization and the zeal for it at 7:35 am. During this time, the service team met up along with Naveen to discuss on the other events for the day.
Breakfast was served at 8:15 am and after half hours time everyone got back to the hall to start off with some action songs.
Naveen took up the following session on “Methods of Evangelization”. It was a brief session and he skimmed through the given notes. Other topics covered were on advantages of team work, challenges and conflicts, practical aspects when we meet as a team etc. Following this everyone were divided into small groups of threes and were asked to share their personal testimonies with one another.
Tea break was announced at 10:30 am and after about ten minutes, the hall was full again. This time the session started off with a video clip on the life of “Pope John Paul II”. This was a half hour movie clip which showed how the Holy Father grew up to lead the catholic church, his extensive travels throughout the world spreading the Good News and his humility and love for everyone and spirit of forgiveness.
Naveen took up the following session on cell groups, its formation, importance and relevance in the life of a Jesus Youth. Along with this he also presented a brief intro on the JY movement and vision, its structure, happenings and focus. He explained on the charisms of a JY member and intermixed this message with personal testimonies on personal prayer, word of God from Rodney bhaiyya, Annette, Vijay, Prakash, Vandana.
He then divided everyone into 4 groups and presented each group with some characters. Each team member was asked to enact their character & then mention how they could blend with a group. This workshop brought about the essence of team work.
At around 12:00 pm there was a panel discussion where Fr. Tom (JY pastor from Bangalore), Rodney bhaiyya, Prakash and Marina took to the stage. Each one of them expressed their views on JY its happenings, history, various ministries, lifestyles, some testimonies etc. Also it had a brief Q&A session.
Lunch was served at 1:00 pm everyone enjoyed their final meal at Flame keepers with lots of excitement and joy. At about 1:45 pm on assembling at the hall, everyone was divided into the same 4 groups again and were asked to draw out a JY plan for the whole of AP. After a long discussion within the teams, each team was then asked to present their plan to everyone around. This saw a lot of new innovative ideas emerging on increasing the JY presence in Andhra.
Prakash then quickly read out the ministries that were formed and its coordinators. Following this, he named the tentative members that would be part of each ministry. Later everyone was divided into the respective ministry teams and then were asked to define atleast two immediate goals for their ministry.
After a quick tea break, it was time for Holy Eucharist at 4:45 pm. It was offered by Fr. Tom and Fr. Vincent (Youth director of Secbad and chaplin of JY-Hyd).
Fr. Tom gave the homily and apart from many things, he mentioned about “ICE” – Initiative, Co-operation and Event which should be a part of every JY member. He also asked us to be gutsy and have a “Go get it” attitude in his usual charismatic and enigmatic style of talk.
Everyone participated whole heartedly in the mass and towards the end everyone was given a candle. All the ministry coordinators were asked to come up to the altar and while their candle was lit, they just knelt down while the rest of the participants just prayed over them.
While invoking the Holy Spirit both the priests prayed on all the coordinators individually and gave their blessings. Later these coordinators passed on that flame to all the other participants and everyone was encouraged to exchange their candle(flame) with as many persons as possible. Again a very emphatic symbolization of passing out flame of love to everyone around. Fr. Vincent concluded the mass with his best wishes and prayers.
Towards the end of the program while Vandana with others’ help felicited the priests, nuns, resource persons with flowers, Prakash thanked them for all their contributions & for being available in making Flame keepers happen. He also thanked all the participants now newly formed leaders, for having come over and being a part of Flame Keepers.
Marina took up the onus of thanking the program team, service team and all the people behind the scenes responsible thus officially bringing down the curtains for Flame Keepers.
Finally, while everyone was dispersing for one last time everyone got together in the center of the hall and went berserk singing and dancing all the action songs one after another. There was so much joy and vibrance in the air that it was electrifying.
At last, everyone bid their farewells and moved along to their homes.
The program and service team members then met up and gave thanks to our Heavenly Father for all HIS goodness & kindness for just being with us all throughout this program. Later everyone presented their opinion & comments on flame keepers and acknowledged and appreciated one another’s efforts.
Flame Keepers ’06 has been an attempt to re-kindle & spark the flame that already had been burning within. It was an endeavor to enrich & encourage everyone to Fan, Tend and Pass that Flame of Love. The end objective was achieved to initiate new and strengthen existing ministries, identify coordinators and team members for each ministry and make them responsible leaders so that they can witness Christ and bring many more souls to HIM. Flame Keepers ’06 had been a fiery experience and we pray that this flame will ever “FLAME ON”.
